NJSA CONTINUES WORK TO BENEFIT NEW JERSEY SPECIALTY CONTRACTORS

NJSA Priority Issue Advances in State Legislature

Assembly Bill 947, sponsored by Assemblyman Troy Singleton (D-7) and Assemblyman Joe Lagana (D-38), which would require the release of plan holder lists under Local Public Contracts Law was also approved by the full Assembly recently in a 59-16 vote. This bill has been moving through the legislative process for a number of years without being able to gain final approval. Releasing on plan holder lists is critical to every aspect of the construction economy, most particularly subcontractors and suppliers.  The bill has been listed for consideration by the Senate Community & Urban Affairs Committee on October 27, 2014.  The Senate version of the bill, S2216 is sponsored by Senator Joe Pennachio (R-26).  NJAPA will continue to play a leading role in moving this important policy initiative forward.

Trust Fund Legislation Introduced in Senate

Senators Sandra Cunningham and Jennifer Beck have introduced Senate Bill xxxx.  This legislation will establish a Trust Fund concept for private construction contracts.  Benefits of the bill include giving construction project owners greater certainty that subcontractors and suppliers on their projects are being paid in a timely manner, providing subcontractors a higher standing in bankruptcy proceedings and providing additional and much needed leverage to subcontractors when they are attempting to collect funds from general contractors for work previously completed and accepted.  The bill is sponsored in the Assembly by Assemblyman Charles Mainor and Wayne DeAngelo.

NJSA Hosts “A Salute to Higher Education Construction” at 43rd Annual Awards Dinner Dance

The NJSA will be celebrating their 43rd Annual Awards Dinner Dance on November 15th, 2014 at the Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick.  This year’s theme will be “A Salute to Higher Education Construction”.

As we all appreciate, the last several years have been very difficult for the construction industry with virtually every sector experiencing a significant contraction.  With nearly every other segment of the industry cutting back dramatically, a handful of major educational projects provided a huge boost for the New Jersey construction economy.  Our honorees will include Montclair State University, New Jersey City University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Rowan University, Rutgers University, Seton Hall University, Stevens Institute, The College of New Jersey, and William Paterson University.

We will also be honoring True & Associates as our Associate Member of the Year Award.  True & Associates has been an active member of the NJSA for several decades and have continuously gone above and beyond in their support for the organization and its mission to advocate for the best interests of our state’s specialty contractors.
